Artist about His Art: Bryce Cameron Liston

As a representational artist, I work in the traditions of the 19th century Classical Romantic period. Although primarily a studio painter, I do gather as much information as possible directly from nature. My subject matter ranges from figurative and portraiture to landscape. By combining these elements, I am often able to introduce historical and mythological themes to my paintings.

I attended the University of Utah in the mid-1980’s, however in need of inspiration; I sought out individual instructors whose teachings more suited my own needs as a painter. I was also employed in the studio of sculptor Edward J. Fraughton for over twelve years. I learned the importance of basic drawing skills from Ed, a concept that was not emphasized at the University.

Inspired by 19th century artistic values, I traveled abroad to study first hand, the works of artists such as Waterhouse, Bouguereau, Gerome, and Tadema. It is important to me to keep alive what these and other artists like them were doing. By continuing in this genre of narrative painting I can bring to life the myths and legends that have shaped our society throughout history. It is my desire to bring back art with which we, as a society, can identify.
